Our Beaverton service department is here to help you with all your powersports vehicle needs, including the servicing and maintenance of your model. One of the most important aspects of keeping your motorcycle running smoothly is changing the oil when appropriate.

While the time frame or mileage may vary on when to get an oil change for your specific motorcycle, different oil types play a factor in how often you should change your oil:

When Do I Need to Change My Motorcycle Oil?

A mineral-based motor oil needs to be replaced after 2,000 to 3,000 miles, while a semi-synthetic motor oil can generally last 5,000-8,000. A fully synthetic motor oil is typically the longest-lasting, with an approximate limit of 7,000-10,000 miles before needing to change the oil.

Again, your motorcycle’s oil change schedule may be different, so it is best to check the user manual of your motorcycle to get the most accurate estimate.

How to Change Your Motorcycle Oil

If it’s time to change your motorcycle oil and you’d like to do it yourself, here are a few tips to do so:

  • Ride the bike for about five minutes to warm it up
  • Turn the engine off and stand the bike upright
  • Remove the oil fill plug, drain plug and oil filter
  • Once the oil is drained, install a new oil filter and put back any removed parts
  • Refill using a funnel and proper amount/type of motorcycle oil
  • Replace the oil fill cap and recycle the used oil
